UPDATE - Dec. 2009:

We applaud the the City of St. John's for their new Animal Control regulations
and their efforts on enforcment.

While we are pleased with this step in the right direction, we know the biggest change has to come with the Provincial Animal Health and Protection Act.  This act is currently under revision and we want everyone to voice their opinions on what should be changed to help the lives of animals in our province.

YOU
can make a difference, email one of the below politicians and let them know that you think that it is UNACCEPTABLE for Beagles to continue to live in these conditions in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

And it continues....  now that rabbit hunting season is in full swing it is not uncommon to see sights like the above.  Beagles being transported in a plywood box on the back of an ATV.

The above photos were taken at a property last winter.  On this property there were 2 beagles, the young male shown above and a senior female beagle who lived in the pictured dog house with no floor.  When the owner was asked if he would give up the senior female beagle, he stated "No, I lend her out to my buddies for hunting"

In response to a complaint that Beagle Paws received, the SPCA investigated this horizontal structure with a grey tarp covering it to find a 9 year old beagle named Max.  This poorly built dog pen was full of dog feces and unfit for any animal to live in.  Now that Max has been rescued he has to learn everything from scratch after spending his whole live without socializtion and little stimulation everything is new to him.  However, we are pleased to say that Max is doing wonderful, he is loving life to the fulliest and even enjoys his daily trips to the dog park where he can run free.  There is always hope for these animals that haven't had the best start at life and the volunteers of Beagle Paws are here to make sure we give them this HOPE !

(Max now enjoying his new life)

The St. John's SPCA shelter has started an online petition to end the chaining of dogs in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

We are encouraging supporters to sign our petition. Write letters to your munipalities and to local papers. Call radio talk shows, tell family and friends, and report cases of neglect to the SPCA.

Together we can make a difference!
